ABOUT

NewGround PR & Marketing is a hard thing to describe. If forced, call it a communications agency. But it’s more than that. It’s a team of storytellers with a passion and commitment that is evident in everything the agency creates, from new websites and branding initiatives to elaborate PR campaigns to ROI-driven social media, digital marketing, and influencer campaign initiatives.  We’re a turnkey agency in a connected world with a lot of chatter. We aim to be heard.

CAROL RUIZ, PRINCIPAL Carol has worn a wide variety of hats, from waitress to award-winning documentary filmmaker to adjunct professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She also has a myriad of personal interests, starting with her grandsons (naturally), and including world travel, gourmet cooking, and fine wine. Carol is also a fascinating storyteller. Storytelling is the heart and soul of public relations, so it’s no wonder Carol ultimately chose PR as her career path. Carol founded NewGround in 2007 as a full service public relations and marketing agency that specializes in residential and commercial real estate development. She brings 20 years of experience in the field to the table. In those 20 years, Carol has developed relationships with editors all over the country and has amassed press in publications like the New York Times, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and Reuters, just to name a few. She has an impressive list of clients, including, but by no means limited to, former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros, MBK Real Estate, a subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., one of the world’s largest companies, TRI Pointe Group, and Gatehouse Capital, the developer the W Hotel nationwide including the W Hotel and Residences on Hollywood and Vine. As principal of NewGround Carol oversees media and client relations and strategies, and new business development. She creates campaigns that blend traditional and non-traditional PR approaches that result in comprehensive campaigns that drive sales and revenue for her clients.

JAMIE LATTA, DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL MEDIA Jamie’s rock the boat, make history, and hell yes attitude is but a small part of the reason she is such a valued member of the NewGround team.  She also holds a communications degree with a triple emphasis on journalism, marketing, and public relations, and is trilingual.  You’d think she would be pretentious, but she is far from it.  Actually, Jamie is grateful that she stretched out the college experience because now she has the rare pleasure of using her college degree in her career. When Jamie joined NewGround PR & Marketing in 2009, she brought with her nine years of accumulative experience in public relations, marketing, and advertising.  Her talents include Search Engine Optimizations (SEO), Copywriting, Editorial, Television Writing, and of course, Social Media.   At NewGround, Jamie helps our clients to extend their brand to social communities by executing social media strategies for them.  She also develops integrative communications programs across mediums and creates engaging strategies to build and grow online communities.

ROBERT O’SHAUGHNESSY, PRESIDENT OF MARKETING & DIGITAL SERVICES Robert earned degrees from the English and History departments at Boston University before moving to Prague and spending a couple years teaching English. After a stint tending bar and waiting tables, he began a career in the San Francisco tech and agency world. All the years combined and melted into Robert’s current role as President of Marketing + Digital Services for NewGround.  He is a frequent speaker, published author, and would almost certainly be glad to go grab a beer with you. Clients frequently praise Robert for keeping a precise eye on maximizing ROI and for making complex strategies clear and easy to understand.  Robert has mastered the art of creating content that gets clients found by their target audience.  The fact that Robert gets hired periodically for hands-on day training sessions is a testament to his talent.  Robert works directly with clients on a variety of online and offline marketing techniques including branding & identity, website design and production, content and email marketing, SEO & SEM (which goes without saying), display advertising, and reporting and consultation that includes close analysis of website traffic and conversions.

SHELLEY MILLER, PRESIDENT Shelley doesn’t do anything halfway.  She cracks the whip to motivate her team members to get a job done perfectly and promptly, and she cracks champagne corks to celebrate success.  Shelley’s all-or-nothing attitude also translates to her love of animals and the happiness she feels when an animal gets adopted. In her role as president of NewGround, Shelley manages the in-house aspect of the public relations team and is responsible for media and client relations and new business development.  She brings 15 years of experience in public relations and marketing to the NewGround team.  Our success is due in part to Shelley’s keen eye for media opportunities and depth of understanding of the urban and suburban real estate markets and consumers.  She offers a fresh perspective on homebuilder marketing and public relations strategies.   Shelley’s previous career accolades include the expansion of her company’s portfolio as well as efforts that resulted in a historic land grand project being allowed to move forward.  She stays abreast of changes in the building industry with her active memberships in the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Urban Land Institute (ULI), and the Building Industry Association (BIA).

KATY BIGGERSTAFF, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS Katy’s attention to detail translates to the passion she shows for her hobbies, which include volunteering with children, yoga, travelling, and making craft beer.  If you want a recommendation for a super hoppy IPA, talk to Katy.  If you want a story pitched that gets picked up, talk to Katy. This attention to detail is evident in the success Katy enjoys with NewGround and in the accomplishments she has achieved throughout her career in public relations.  As Public Relations Manager, she counsels clients with the best strategy in order to help build awareness of their brand and grow market share.  Katy is also responsible for developing, implementing, and managing regional and national public relations campaigns for many of our real estate and homebuilding clients. Katy’s experience in public relations and marketing is too expansive to discuss in short form, but includes both commercial real estate (office, industrial, retail, and mixed-use) and economic development as well as residential real estate with both single family and multifamily homes.  She has many impressive accomplishments under her belt, two of which are Public Relation’s Society of America (PRSA) PROTOS award for a front page story in the Los Angeles Times and a PRSA accolade recognizing a feature cover story in Contract magazine.
